The weekend approaches!

There are some incredible events taking place this Thursday to get you excited about Victoria.

Learn about some local biodiversity in the area, about the astronomy work that is coming out of the science community here in Victoria, support local farmers, catch some comedy from some of the best comedians in the city or catch a cult classic at everyone’s favourite independent theatre!

Astronomy On Tap at the Vicious Poodle

Head down to the Vicious Poodle to learn about science while enjoying a beverage!

These are fun and free outreach events where astronomers give presentations on exciting science topics at local bars.

Victoria is home to several world-class science institutions, and Astro on Tap is thrilled to showcase Vancouver Island’s fascinating research in a casual bar setting where everyone can learn.

This is the launch of the event, which will be held at the Vicious Poodle, a fantastic LGBTQ+ safe bar downtown.

Stick around for space-themed trivia afterwards, and of course, enjoy the food and drinks served by the incredible host!

The first speaker will be Dr. Akshara Viswanathan, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Victoria studying stars in the Milky Way Galaxy.

Dr. Viswanathan will present, Our Galaxy Through Time: The Turbulent Past, Ordered Present and Eventful Future.

The event is free and everyone is welcome to attend. Please be respectful of the 2SLGBTQ+ nature of the venue.

Creatures of the Summer Night with Kay at Swan Lake Nature Sanctuary

Join science communicator Kay for an indoor and outdoor exploration of the nocturnal creatures who call Swan Lake home.

Adaptations and key features of owls, bats and other night loving creatures will be explored on a short walk. Learn how you can identify signs of these nocturnal neighbours, and see real example specimens up close and personal. You never know ‘whooo’ you’re going to see…

Some steps and sloped gravel trails will be part of the path for this event.

The Nature House will be open from 6 p.m. for participants, and for half an hour after the program’s end for further exploration.

This event is well suited for all ages: families, or adults—children under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a participating adult.

Esquimalt Farmers Market

This food-first market is a foodie’s dream!

Peruse an amazing selection of local businesses, pick up a delicious dinner from a hot food vendor and enjoy twice nightly musical performances while the kids run wild in the onsite playground.

In addition to food, there will be a fantastic selection of artisans and crafters yielding everything from soap to hand-printed tea towels, clothing, jewellery and more.

The weekly vendor map will be posted on the Esquimalt Market website so you can see who will be there each week and plan your trips.

Parking is limited at this location so organizers recommend walking, using transit (#15 or #26 bus) or riding your bicycle.

Harold Night with Garden City Improv

Join Garden City Improv for The Harold—improv’s high wire act.

Watch it performed by some of Victoria’s funniest improvisers!

Enjoy an evening of long-form improv comedy, with hilarious characters and interwoven stories, all inspired by a single audience suggestion!

Dirty Dancing at the Vic Theatre

Nobody puts this 80s classic in a corner!

Step back to a summer of romance, unforgettable music and dance moves that became movie history.

Cheer for Baby and Johnny as sparks fly on and off the dance floor.

The film stars Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey, Jerry Orbach and Cynthia Rhodes.
