Port Alberni man sentenced to 22 years in prison for sexual offences

A Port Alberni resident has received a 22-year sentence after being convicted of sexual offences by the courts.

Shaun Pater, 47, received his sentence on August 11th, and his charges included one count of sexual interference involving a person under the age of 14, two counts of sexual interference involving persons under the age of 16 and one count of sexual assault.

When Pater went to court, he was facing 15 charges relating to sexual offences, and he was not alone. Alongside Pater were accused collaborators Terrance Houbregs and Wayne Moore, who have yet to be sentenced.

After Pater was charged, BC Prosecution Service hit him with an additional dozen charges, making the total number of charges against him 27.

He has now been convicted and sentenced on four of those charges.

“These historical offences spanned several years and required an exceptional degree of dedication and investigative skill to bring these matters before the courts, to obtain justice and hopefully, to gain some measure of closure, for those individuals directly impacted by the offender,” said Inspector Kim Bruce, officer in charge of the Port Alberni RCMP detachment.

Port Alberni RCMP say they recognize the courage of victims and witnesses who participated in the criminal justice process.

Because Pater’s victims were minors, a court-ordered publication ban remains in effect, limiting the information available to the public in this court case.
