Families looking for an affordable way to spend the holiday can head downtown this Monday.

The Royal BC Museum and IMAX Victoria are opening their doors for Family Day on February 16th with by-donation admission to the museum and $5 movie tickets all day at IMAX.

The museum says the goal is to make the experience accessible to families across British Columbia.

“As a provincial cultural institution, we know how important it is to be open and accessible to the people of British Columbia,” said acting CEO Ry Moran in a statement.

“By offering by-donation admission and discounted IMAX Victoria tickets this Family Day, we want families to experience the joy of spending time here.”

Visitors can explore the museum’s core galleries and feature exhibitions throughout the day.On the second floor, the Natural History Gallery will showcase the 61st edition of Wildlife Photographer of the Year, featuring striking images of landscapes and wildlife from around the world.

BC photographer Shane Gross returns with a new image titled Like an Eel out of Water, while Canadian teen Beckett Robertson makes his debut in the Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition with Cave Stalker.

Upstairs on the third floor, guests ages 10 and up can step into Critical Distance, an augmented reality experience that brings visitors face-to-face with a holographic orca pod.

The exhibit follows J-Pod, a group of endangered Southern Resident orcas that live in the Salish Sea off the coast of Vancouver Island.

Families can also wander through popular permanent exhibits including Old Town, Forgotten Landscapes, HMS Discovery, Jonathan Hunt House, and Our Living Languages.

Downstairs at IMAX Victoria, $5 admission will grant access to a lineup of educational documentaries such as Butterfly Journey, Wild Rescue, Tiger Tiger, and Shark Kingdom.

For those unable to attend on Family Day, the museum is also hosting Community Days on February 14th and 15th. During that weekend, children 17 and under and seniors can visit for free, while youth aged 18 to 24 will receive 50 per cent off admission.
