School is back in session, and Nanaimo RCMP and Sidney/North Saanich RCMP have issued safety reminders to keep students, parents and motorists safe.
Both RCMP divisions have issued statements with back to school safety tips for drivers, including a reminder to follow school bus regulations.
When a school bus has its red lights flashing or stop sign extended, drivers in both directions must come to a complete stop.
The notices also remind drivers that they must slow down to 30 km/h hour when passing through school zones from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Monday to Friday. In playground zones, the 30 km/h limit is in effect from dawn until dusk seven days a week.
Police are warning drivers that areas around schools may be busier during the first two weeks of September, and suggest planning accordingly.
With an increased number of e-scooter incidents in the area recently, Nanaimo RCMP have also included messaging regarding e-scooters.
Police are reminding parents and students that e-scooter riders must be at least 16 years old, and e-bike riders must be at least 14.
All riders must be wearing a helmet at all times, and e-scooters are only permitted on public roadways and designated bicycle lanes where allowed.
“The start of a new school year brings increased traffic and more children walking, cycling, and using scooters to get to and from school,” said Inspector Donovan Tait, operations officer with Nanaimo RCMP.
“Every driver, cyclist and pedestrian has a role to play in keeping our roads safe. Slow down, stay alert and be especially mindful in school and playground zones. A few extra seconds of caution can help prevent a tragedy and ensure every child arrives safely at school and back home.”
Nanaimo and Sidney/North Saanich RCMP are also reminding residents to stay off their cell phones while driving, and to make sure they stay alert at crosswalks and intersections.
