School is back and the streets are busy with commuters using many forms of active transportation.
Last week, West Shore RCMP’s traffic unit and bylaw officers teamed up to catch cyclists and scooter-users riding unsafely on the streets of Langford.
This “education and enforcement” was meant to help encourage the safe use of bicycles and scooters at several locations throughout Langford.
During the initiative, Police say they issued a total of 25 warnings, as well as one violation ticket for various infractions, including:
- Cycling without a helmet – $29 fine
- Riding a bicycle on the sidewalk – $129 fine
- Careless cycling – $109 fine
Police say this violation ticket was issued to an individual who had already received a prior warning from police and bylaw officers.
They added that despite the warning, the cyclist continued to ride carelessly in the area.
“Bicycles and scooters share the roadways and pathways with vehicles and pedestrians, and safety needs to be a priority for everyone,” says Cst. Riley Smith, West Shore RCMP Traffic Unit.
“Wearing a helmet, obeying traffic laws, and riding with awareness not only protects the rider but makes it safer for other road users as well.”
West Shore RCMP say their traffic unit is planning similar proactive initiatives throughout their jurisdiction.
