Drivers and pedestrians in Esquimalt should be prepared for temporary road closures and brief traffic delays on the morning of Saturday, April 5th, as the community hosts the annual Esquimalt 5K and Kids 1K Fun Run.
The event, which begins at 9 a.m. and wraps up around 10:30 a.m., is expected to draw more than 600 participants.
Runners and walkers will start and finish their race along Lyall Street, between Fraser Street and Lampson Street, just outside the Archie Browning Sports Centre.
The main road closure will affect Lyall Street between Admirals Road and Lampson Street, which will be shut down to vehicle traffic from 8:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. to allow for the safe staging and completion of the race.
The rest of the race route will remain open to vehicles, although drivers are urged to slow down and be cautious of runners and walkers sharing the road.
Participants will make their way through some of Esquimalt’s most scenic areas, including Saxe Point Park and Macaulay Park, along with several peaceful residential neighbourhoods.
VicPD officers, reserve constables, and trained race marshals will be stationed at key intersections to help manage traffic and ensure the safety of all involved.
Once the race wraps up, the fun continues inside the Archie Browning Sports Centre, where the Esquimalt Recreation team will host a lively post-race celebration.
Kids can enjoy a bouncy castle and games in the Kids Zone, while all participants are welcome to grab snacks, take photos at a themed booth provided by Four Frames Photography, and take part in a group stretching session.
Draws for prizes will take place between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. in the Curling Rink, and participants must be present to claim their prize.
Anyone who anticipates being on the course for more than 55 minutes is encouraged to notify organizers at bib pick-up so their name can be entered for the draw in advance.
Refreshments for the event are being generously provided by Country Grocer.
Whether you’re lacing up your running shoes or cheering from the sidelines, Esquimalt’s 5K and Kids Fun Run promises a memorable morning for families and fitness fans alike.
