A large cougar was spotted in a Sidney neighbourhood Tuesday evening, prompting a warning from Sidney/North Saanich RCMP.
Police say they received a report around 5:07 p.m. on April 22nd about a cougar perched in a tree near the 9600-block of Epco Drive. By the time officers arrived, the animal had left the area and its direction of travel was unknown.
“There was no indication that the cat was stalking any people or pets, but everyone in the area should be aware when outside with small children or animals,” said Staff Sergeant Kris Clark of the BC RCMP.
He stressed that there is no need to report cougar sightings unless the animal is actively posing a threat. “If spotted, please leave it alone and give it space,” Clark added.
The BC Conservation Officer Service has been notified of the sighting.
Video captured by a resident shows the cougar resting high in a tree before it eventually climbs down and disappears into the surrounding trees.
Residents are reminded to supervise pets and children when outdoors, especially in areas close to wooded or rural environments where wildlife may be present.
On Monday, Central Saanich Police issued a similar warning after receiving multiple reports of a cougar being seen romaing the community.
A resident who lives in the 7700 block of Wallace Drive posted a video on Facebook showing a feline walking outside the front door of their home around 8 p.m. Monday night.
Police attempted to locate the cougar, which was reportedly running north along Wallace Drive toward Mt Newton Cross Road.
The cougar was last seen near Mt Newton Cross Road at East Saanich Road—use caution while walking in this area.
