The District of Saanich is holding a public information session next week to inform residents of an upcoming three-phase road construction project in the Gorge/Tillicum area.
This project will see above-ground infrastructure upgraded in an effort to increase road safety and below ground work will be done to prepare the area for the future.
On top of replacing underground utilities and the sanitary lift station, the project will also see new bike lanes installed and safety measures put in place for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists alike.
Specifically, the three-phase project will see the following improvements:
- 307 meters of sanitary sewer replacement
- 478 meters of storm drain replacement
- Albina Lift Station Replacement
- Protected cycling facilities
- Tactile walking strip indicators for visually impaired.
- Intersection upgrades at the intersections of Gorge and Tillicum, Gorge and Harriet as well as Tillicum and Arena
- Boulevard landscaping
- Improved street lighting
- External utility relocation of Fortis, Hydro and Telus
- Bus stop relocations and service improvements
Phases one and two will begin in 2025 and will focus on the Albina Lift Station and the replacement of underground infrastructure, while phase three will see active transportation upgrades implemented.
Construction is expected to take around two years to complete, once started.
The District of Saanich says that during construction, those commuting in the area can expect typical construction inconveniences such as noise and road closures with access to local traffic only.
They noted that contractors will be expected to ensure there is always safe pedestrian access, residents will be able to access their properties and businesses will be able to operate as usual.
On Monday, October 21st, the District will be holding a public information event to present the concept designs to interested residents and will be engaging with those who have concerns about the work being done.
