A new pickleball court opened today at Topaz Park, highlighting a continued investment from the City of Victoria in park improvements and outdoor recreation facilities.
The area has 11 dedicated courts with permanent nets, fencing, a shade structure and lighting fixtures that make it possible to use the courts in the evening.
Pickleball is the fastest-growing sport in North America, and this hub helps to meet the growing demand for pickleball courts and other accessible recreation in the region.
The hub was designed with input from the Victoria Regional Pickleball Association (VRPA).
“We’re tremendously excited to see this facility open,” said Roger Graves, president of VRPA.
“It’s a fantastic addition for our growing community of players.”
There are 10 other pickleball courts across the city, located in Beacon Hill Park, Central Park, Oaklands Park and Bernard Park.
The creation of these courts is in line with the City of Victoria’s Strategic Plan goal to improve recreational sports amenities and promote healthy living.
“It’s great to see these new courts open at Topaz Park, creating more opportunities for people to get active, connect with one another and enjoy our beautiful outdoor spaces,” said Derrick Newman, director of Parks and Recreation.
“This hub responds to the growing popularity of pickleball and reflects our commitment to healthy living and accessible recreation for all ages and abilities.”
The park is also benefitting from other upgrades as part of the Topaz Park Improvement Plan.
New features include improved pathways through the park and an updated outdoor fitness area.
There is also a gathering space implemented specifically for youth, with bike racks, a misting station and accessible seating.
The City of Victoria Youth Council provided input on the design of this space, which offers a safe space for young people to socialize.
These upgrades are part of phase two of the park’s improvement plan, which also includes a fenced dog park scheduled to open later this year.
