A new 21-storey tower with purpose-built rental units has been approved by the Township of Esquimalt’s council this week.

The new tower will be built by Belmont Properties and Intracorp near CFB Esquimalt, at 1340 Sussex Street and 1337 Saunders Street.

The site currently holds two older four-storey apartment buildings with tenants still living there.

As per BC standards, the tenants of these two buildings will be given four-months notice before they have to vacate their homes.

The new rental tower will feature 327-units, of which 157 will be studio and one-bedroom apartments, while the rest will be two-bedrooms and three-bedrooms.

Next to the tower, a publicly accessible, 18,500 square foot park will be built for the community.

This park will reportedly have a pirate ship playground, a sports court, water feature and a public washroom.

The building will be able to accommodate bike parking spaces for 415 residents and 241 vehicles, along with two car share spots.

On the ground level, there will be nearly 2,600 square-feet of retail space.
