Here’s who British Columbians view as Canada’s best and worst prime ministers

Share

Since Confederation in 1867, Canada has had 24 different individuals serve as prime minister, with the most recent being Mark Carney, who was elected just over one year ago.

In that group of 24 leaders, some are hated, some are beloved and some are largely forgotten.

In a recent poll conducted by BC-based Research Co., British Columbians were asked who was the best, worst and everything in between.

Since 1968, there have been 10 prime ministers. Of them, BC respondents heavily favour Stephen Harper, with 23% saying he was the best of the bunch.

Following Harper, 18% answered that Mark Carney is the best, with Pierre Trudeau at 12%, followed by Jean Chrétien at 9%, Brian Mulroney at 6% and Justin Trudeau at 5%.

When the question was flipped and Research Co. asked BC respondents who the worst of this group was, 34% answered Justin Trudeau, Kim Campbell was next at 8%, then came Stephen Harper and Brian Mulroney tied at 7% and Mark Carney had 6% voted him as worst prime minister.

Research Co. also had respondents who the best prime ministers in Canadian History are.

Of the 24 leaders, British Columbians believe Pierre Trudeau to be the best with a vote of 35%, Stephen Harper and Mark Carney are tied at second with 33% of the vote and the first prime minister, John A. Macdonald came in third with 27%.

When asked who the worst in all of Canada’s history was, Justin Trudeau received a resounding 47% of the vote, Stephen Harper seems to be hated just as much as he is loved with 27% and Pierre Trudeau also seems to be a contentious leader with 19% of BC respondents believing him to be the worst.
