Pacific Opera Victoria weaves together opera, jazz, and Margaret Atwood’s poetry, in Zombie Blizzard, a one-night-only, genre-defying performance on January 18th.
This part-concert, part-poetic experience is the second show in Pacific Opera Victoria’s Luminary Series, featuring soprano Measha Brueggergosman-Lee and composer Aaron Davis performing alongside the words of author Margaret Atwood.
Brueggergosman-Lee and Davis have collaborated for 20 years, co-producing four CDs and performing with symphonies and ensembles worldwide. Their long partnership brings a seasoned musical depth to this unique show.
Classical and jazz music provides a rich backdrop for poems from Atwood’s 2020 collection, Dearly. Pieces like “Zombie,” “Blizzard,” and “Health Class” explore grief, gender, and humour, bringing each poem vividly to life through music and her recitation.
“Measha is one of Canadian most celebrated operatic artists, and this piece combines her operatic traditional with the words of Margaret Atwood, into a jazz fusion that just explodes with new artistic possibilities and experiences,” said Brenna Corner, Pacific Opera Artistic Director.
“I can’t wait to have her join us in January – it is going to be a fabulous night!”
Don’t miss this extraordinary evening where music and poetry collide to celebrate the fragility and strength of the human spirit.
