Speed believed to be a factor in fatal Malahat motorcycle crash: RCMP

A motorcyclist has died following a single-vehicle crash on the Malahat section of the Trans-Canada Highway near Mill Bay last night.

The collision occured around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 5th, near Mill Bay Road, about 4 km north of the Malahat Summit.

According to Shawnigan Lake RCMP, the rider was travelling northbound when they lost control and struck the centre median.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. BC Emergency Health Services confirmed that one ambulance was dispatched to the crash, but no one was transported to hospital.

The highway was shut down in both directions for approximately three hours while police conducted their investigation and gathered evidence.

“It appears that speed may have played an important factor leading up to the crash,” said Corporal Alex Bérubé, spokesperson for the BC RCMP.
