Things are about to get wild, Victoria!

Drivers on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland should brace for the first big snow dump of the season this weekend, with sub-zero temperatures and messy road conditions in the forecast.

Environment Canada is warning of snow accumulation for some parts of BC starting Thursday evening, January 30th, and continuing into Friday, January 31st.

While higher elevations will see snowfall first, the cold-weather system is expected to bring snow and freezing rain to sea-level areas throughout the weekend and into early next week.

Forecasters say snowfall could range from 5 to 20 cm, with heavy accumulation at times making travel tricky.

If you have to drive, make sure your vehicle is winter-ready. Winter tires are required for routes like the Malahat and Sea to Sky Highway. Those who do venture out should be prepared for delays and have emergency supplies on hand, including food, water, and blankets.

Wind Warning for Greater Victoria

In addition to the snow, strong winds are set to hit Greater Victoria, particularly near the Juan de Fuca Strait. Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a wind warning for the region, with westerly winds expected to gust up to 90 km/h on Friday evening.

The strong winds are due to a low-pressure system moving across the south coast. While the winds will weaken overnight as the system moves inland, blustery conditions are expected to persist through Saturday, though below warning levels.

Road Maintenance and Closures

In a media release, the BC Government said highway crews are getting ready, with anti-icing brine being applied ahead of the storm.

On Vancouver Island, maintenance teams are prepping for the storm by applying anti-icing brine and keeping plows and tow trucks on standby to tackle snowy conditions as they develop.
