Two 3D designs revealed of new Sooke Skate Park for feedback from public (PHOTOS)

After several months of planning and designing, the Sooke and Electoral Area Parks and Recreation Commission (SEAPARC) has revealed two options of what the new Sooke Skate Park will look like for feedback.

The current Sooke Skate Park was built in 1997 by the Rotary Club of Sooke, but it has since become dated and needs a replacement which the Capital Regional District (CRD) has allotted for.

The two concept designs for the new Sooke Skate Park have different features but both would give skaters throughout the region ample reason to go skate once the project is completed.

Design one: Sooke Basin

The first design features a low bowl, street section and a pool for skaters to enjoy.

According to SEAPARC, the street course is largely the same in both concepts, including all the staples for a street skater.

Both Design one and two feature a flat bar, manual pad, flat ledge, bump to bars and ledges, a three-set with rail and ‘hubbas’ with banks and QP’s at the ends.

However, this course has the addition of a five-set of stairs that distinguishes it from the other one.

SEAPARC says the pool in this design is 5′ deep in the shallow end and 7’6″ in the deeper end.

The flow bowl is primarily 5′ deep, with a 7′ extension and the 8′ clamshell.

In the flow section, there will be a traditional ‘coping bowl’, a ‘portal’ or loop-able funnel or bullring and the rainbow coping over the hip.

Design two: Sooke Wave

The second design for the park is comprised of two distinct areas. The street course is largely the same as the Sooke Basin design, minus the five-set. SEAPARC says the bank to curb distinguishes this street course from the other one.

In the unique section of this rendering, the flow bowl is primarily 5′ deep, with a 7′ extension and the 8′ clamshell.

In this design the bowl is much bigger and the portal, loop-able funnel or bullring is skateable from both sides. Skaters can either loop, grind over the ‘doorway’ or ride over the ‘easy doorway’ on the tighter end of the funnel.

Currently, SEAPARC has only secured the funding to complete the designs for the new Sooke Skate Park.

Next steps will include securing funding through the CRD to complete the construction phase once designs are finalized.

Those who wish to provide feedback on what the park should look like can do so here.
