With the kids across the region getting back into the classroom on Tuesday, September 3rd, police departments across Greater Victoria are reminding motorists of school zones coming back into effect.
All jurisdictions in Greater Victoria have made a video to warn drivers they will be out in “full-force” to enforce school zone speed limits.
In BC, school zones mean drivers must drive no more than 30 km/h between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. on school days.
Additionally, playground zones mean drivers must go no more than 30 km/h between dawn and dusk.
The ticket for speeding in a school zone is around $200, and will cost motorists three driving points, according to VicPD.

Police say that although speeding in school zones is a massive concern of theirs, they will also be keeping an eye on distracted drivers.
They added that distracted driving is a factor in nearly 40% of crashes in BC.
“With school zones expected to be busy, it’s crucial to stay focused and avoid using your phone while driving,” wrote VicPD in a media release.
“Parents and caregivers are encouraged to speak with their children about staying attentive while commuting.”
Police advise that children remove earbuds, put away devices and make eye contact with drivers before crossing at designated crosswalks.
