Beehive Wool Shop, one of Victoria’s oldest and most beloved shops, is celebrating their 120th anniversary.
The shop has been operating since 1906, and to celebrate their impressive longevity, Beehive will be hosting a tea party this weekend.
Beehive Wool Shop has long been known as a place where generations of knitters, crocheters, weavers, spinners and makers have gathered, brought together by their love of crafting.
The business started out as Beehive Yarns and Dry Goods and was a retailer of yarn, fabric and woolen underwear.
After moving locations several times Beehive landed on Fort Street, where it remained for several decades.
Through the years, trends shifted and the shop’s specialty became fine British woollen yarns and fabric, gradually phasing out dry goods products.
At one point there were several Beehive locations, but in 1999, the business’ current location at 1700 Douglas Street was secured.
The business has changed hands three times now, having first been run by the Fowler family for two generations. The Orme family bought Beehive in the 50s and sold to Valerie Huggett in 1997.
“People often come to Beehive looking for yarn, but what they really find is community,” said Julia Huggett, current owner and operator of Beehive.
“For generations, this has been a place where friendships are formed, skills are shared, and creativity is passed from one person to another. Celebrating 120 years is really about celebrating the people who made Beehive part of their lives.”
The anniversary celebration welcomes longtime customers, local makers, neighbours, artists and friends of Beehive.
The event will include an evening of tea, anniversary cake, gluten-free treats, conversation and stories regarding the relationships and traditions that have defined the shop for more than a century.
The 120th Anniversary Tea Party will be held on Saturday, May 16th, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Beehive Fibre Arts Centre.
