Elections BC has announced they will be issuing a recall petition for the Vancouver-Quilchena electoral district, where OneBC’s Dallas Brodie was elected.
This petition gives the constituents of that riding the opportunity to oust Brodie as their MLA, and trigger a byelection.
According to Elections BC, any registered voter in British Columbia can apply to have a recall petition issued for their electoral district.
In this case, the proponent of the recall petition has been identified as Dorothy Cumming.
Cumming has paid the $50 processing fee, and made a statement of 200 words or less on why she feels Brodie is unfit to serve her electoral district.
The petition will be issued on May 21st, and canvassers must obtain 15,232 signatures, representing 40% of registered voters in that riding.
The signatures must be submitted to Elections BC by July 20th.
If Cummings is successful in obtaining the minimum number of signatures, Elections BC will begin the verification process within 42 days.
In the event of a successful recall petition, Brodie’s seat would become vacant and a by-election would be called within 90 days.
Since 1995, there have been 30 previous recall petition attempts. None have been successful.
Brodie has come under mass scrutiny for her views that deny the existence of over 215 unmarked graves at the Kamloops Residential School, and refuting the fact that what was done to Indigenous Peoples in Canada qualifies as a form of genocide.
She was first elected as a member of the Conservative Party of British Columbia, but was ousted from the party for her problematic views.
Brodie then formed the new political party OneBC with Tara Armstrong from the Kelowna-Lake Country-Coldstream electoral district.
In December 2025, Brodie was removed as leader of OneBC, but was reinstated eight days later.
Armstrong has since left OneBC and now sits as an Independent, making Brodie the only OneBC representative with a seat in the legislative assembly.
