Two wildfires on Vancouver Island brought under control by firefighters

Two wildfires discovered on Vancouver Island over the weekend have been brought under control by BC Wildfire Service and local firefighters.

One was discovered just off the Trans-Canada Highway near Ladysmith, while the second is located just outside of Coombs. 

The blaze located east of Ladysmith, near Tyee Creek was detected mid-afternoon on Sunday, May 3rd. 

A joint response between the BC Wildfire Service and Ladysmith Fire Department attacked the fire, quickly bringing it under control. 

The fire grew to a size of 0.2 hectares and is believed to be human-caused. 

The blaze near Coombs was also discovered on Sunday, and is believed to be caused by humans as well. 

It was located within the Coombs-Hilliers Fire Department jurisdiction, but a BC Wildfire Service initial crew aided in bringing the fire under control. 

At its peak, this wildfire grew to a size of 0.3 hectares. 

These are the only two wildfires currently burning on Vancouver Island, but throughout BC, there are 28 wildfires in total. 

Currently, there are no fire restrictions or fire bans from the Coastal Fire Centre for the Vancouver Island region. 

Vancouver Islanders are urged to use precaution when having a fire and to check in with local, municipal or First Nations authorities before starting a fire.
