A West Shore-based crane company has been fined more than $164,000 by WorkSafeBC following what the agency describes as a repeated high-risk safety violation involving high-voltage electrical equipment.

According to WorkSafeBC, MR Crane was issued a penalty of $164,189.76 on March 31st, after an inspection at a construction site in Ladysmith.

WorkSafeBC said the company had supplied and was operating a tower crane at the site when inspectors discovered the crane’s zone-limiting device did not include a load limiter designed to prevent the crane from coming into contact with nearby high-voltage conductors during lifts.

The agency said the company failed to ensure the crane was equipped with a zone-limiting device that would prevent it from operating within the minimum approach distance of exposed electrical equipment.

WorkSafeBC classified the violation as both “repeated” and “high-risk.”

That case is currently under review by WorkSafeBC’s internal Review Division.

Under BC’s Workers Compensation Act, employers can request reviews of health and safety enforcement decisions within 45 days.

Decisions made by the Review Division can also be appealed to the independent Workers’ Compensation Appeal Tribunal.

The company falls under the construction sector and is classified within crane operation services.
