In mid-August, the Capital Regional District (CRD) announced they would be refurbishing the log sign for Thetis Lake Regional Park and have now provided an update on the work’s progress.
In January 2023, the CRD revealed plans to remove the wooden landmark and replace it with a smaller, modern sign to standardize signage across regional parks.
The notion was met with backlash from residents, with thousands commenting in disapproval on social media.
At the time, many argued the old wooden sign was part of the park’s identity, saying the proposed replacement lacked the character of the original.
“We heard and appreciated all the passion and nostalgia that was expressed, as well as the history around the log that was revealed,” said the CRD when they announced plans to remove the sign.
After around one month of work being done to refurbish the sign, the CRD has released photos showing the sandblasting work that has been completed on the log sign.
Furthermore, the CRD says the borate rods to slow further deterioration have been inserted.

“As you might remember, this refurbishment work is being undertaken in an effort to ensure that this friendly and welcoming presence that has existed at Thetis Lake for decades, will continue to do so for at least another 10 years,” said the CRD in a social media post.
“We continue to look forward to the completion of the refurbishment work over the next couple of months; stay tuned for more images of the project as work progresses!”
Next steps in the sign’s refurbishment will see the completion of the new upper portion of the sign and the re-staining of the entire log in its former grey colour scheme.
The CRD noted that the work will not have any major impact on visitors to the park or on parking.
Restoration efforts are expected to be completed sometime this fall.
