Victoria For All, a new municipal political party has announced three candidates for the upcoming local elections in October
Over the weekend, the political slate held a launch event at Centennial Square, at which two Victoria city council candidates and one SD61 school board candidate announced their candidacy and priorities.
Under the Victoria For All banner, incumbent Victoria Councillor Susan Kim will be seeking re-election, while first-time city council candidate Peter Rose Gibbs and school board trustee candidate Maiya Beech will also seek election.
At the launch event, the candidates spoke about their shared vision, which is focused on community care, housing solutions and climate action.
Specifically, the candidates are hoping that, if elected, they will be able to work together to expand mental health and addictions crisis response teams, double spending on affordable housing, retain the urban tree canopy and create free, year-round community gathering spaces that are accessible to everyone.
“I’m running because I believe a city works best when we look out for one another and make sure no one is left behind,” said Peter Rose Gibbs.
“As a parent, I want to see a Victoria where families can afford to build a life, where people can get the support they need and where our public spaces and services are there for everyone. We can build that kind of city together.”
Kim spoke to the achievements she has been a part of on city council over the last four years and her hopes for the next four years.
“I’m proud of what has been accomplished over the past four years at City Hall, and now I’m excited to continue that work with Victoria For All,” said Susan Kim.
“At the heart of this campaign is a belief that Victoria is strongest when everyone feels they belong here. We’re committed to creating the community connections and investing in strong social foundations that make that possible.”
As for the SD61 school board candidate, Beech spoke of their experiences working in education, as a parent and of their priorities to advance reconciliation, connect students with supports in-school and integrate more before- and after-school care programs on school grounds.
“I believe public education is one of the most important investments we can make in our children and in our community’s future,” said Beech.
“I want every student and teacher to feel welcomed, supported and safe—and I believe it is the responsibility of your SD61 Trustees to create these conditions. We can build school communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and do their best.”
As of this publication, Victoria For All is the only organized municipal political party with candidates on the ballot in the City of Victoria’s election.
The municipal election will be held on Saturday, October 17th.
