Finding a parking spot at Royal Jubilee Hospital can already be challenging, and parkade construction this summer may add to that.
In a media release, Island Health says major maintenance work on the hospital’s parkade will begin on July 13th, bringing temporary parking disruptions that are expected to last through the fall.
The work will affect staff parking on the fourth and fifth levels of the parkade, while repairs to ramps throughout the structure will also create periodic access restrictions to upper levels.
That means public parking stalls on levels one through three could also be impacted at various times throughout the project.
To help minimize disruptions, Island Health says most ramp repairs will take place on weekends, though some parking restrictions will still be unavoidable.
The maintenance work is being carried out to ensure the long-term safety and usability of the parkade for patients, visitors and staff.
Adding to the challenge, roadwork is also scheduled along Richmond Road between Bay Street and Newton Street.
The road construction is expected to take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, for several months and is anticipated to cause traffic delays in the area.
With both projects happening at the same time, Island Health is encouraging anyone attending appointments or visiting loved ones at Royal Jubilee Hospital to allow extra travel time and, where possible, arrange for drop-offs and pick-ups instead of relying on parking.
Island Health says the current phase of parkade repairs is expected to be completed this fall, with additional maintenance work planned for next year.
“We recognize this work may be disruptive to staff, patients and visitors, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause,” Island Health said in their statement.
The health authority thanked the public for their patience as the necessary upgrades are completed.
