Nanaimo RCMP warn public about social media ‘dook kick’ challenge

Nanaimo RCMP have issued a warning to the public about a social media trend known as the “TikTok Door Kick Challenge.”

Police say this trend emerged in 2025 and has reportedly been impacting neighbourhoods across Nanaimo, particularly in the Departure Bay area.

What police have observed is that the trend primarily targets youth between the ages of 13 and 15, and encourages them to aggressively kick, pound or strike residential doors either late at night or in the early morning to disrupt residents.

The act is typically recorded on video for social media and when they are done, perpetrators run away.

According to police, residents of Nanaimo have reported thousands of dollars in property damage, including repairs to doors and entryways.

Because of this trend, police say that many homeowners have also invested in security cameras, lighting and alarm systems as deterrents to the repeated disturbances.

“These incidents are not harmless pranks,” said R/Constable Gary O’Brien, Media Relations Officer for the Nanaimo RCMP.

“The aggressive nature of these acts has caused significant fear among residents, especially seniors and vulnerable people, who may believe someone is attempting to break into their home.”

In addition to the alleged property damage caused by the door kick challenge, the trend has reportedly left some residents fearful, with some homeowners taking matters into their own hands by chasing suspects after disturbances occur.

“While residents are understandably frustrated, pursuing suspects creates additional safety risks for everyone involved,” said O’Brien. “There is serious potential for someone to be injured.”

To help curb the issue, Nanaimo RCMP are encouraging parents and guardians to speak with their children about the matter, as it could be considered criminal and dangerous behaviour.

Police are reminding the public that intentionally damaging property or causing disturbances may result in criminal charges.

Anyone experiencing suspicious activity or property damage because of this trend is encouraged to report it to Nanaimo RCMP at (250) 754-2345.
