A section of Hammond Bay Road in Nanaimo was closed Thursday morning following a head-on collision that police believe may have involved impaired driving.

According to Nanaimo RCMP, officers were called to the 5100 block of Hammond Bay Road just before 5 a.m. on June 11th after reports of a two-vehicle crash.

Police say the collision involved two vehicles in a head-on crash.

The two drivers and one passenger were assessed by paramedics and treated for injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

As investigators examined the scene, Hammond Bay Road was closed between Dunn Place and Entwhistle Road for more than an hour.

Drivers in the area were asked to use alternate routes, with southbound traffic redirected via Entwhistle Road and northbound traffic diverted through Williamson Road.

RCMP indicated that impaired driving is believed to be a factor in the crash. The investigation remains ongoing.

Police are asking motorists to avoid the area and follow posted detours while crews continue their work.

More information will be provided as it becomes available.
