The FIFA World Cup is in full swing, and in Victoria, all over BC and beyond fans are starting to get excited about what the future has in store for Team Canada.
Following a 6-0 win over Qatar on Thursday last week, Canada is looking better than many anticipated.
The club broke records aplenty in that match.
The contest was Canada’s first-ever win in their three World Cup appearances, the most points scored by Team Canada in any game at the tournament as well as the most points scored by any CONCACAF team in the tournament’s history.
Currently sitting at the top of Group B with one win against Qatar and a draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada needs a draw or a win in their next match to finish as the number one seed in the group, which would mean finishing ahead of the Swiss favourites and setting themselves up nicely in the knockout stage.
The next match is an important one, and comes against Switzerland at 12 p.m. this Wednesday, June 24th.
Switzerland also won big in their last match, beating Bosnia and Herzegovina four to one.
While both teams sit at one win and one draw in the group, Canada being so dominant in their victory means they hold the point differential lead.
A draw or a win would send Canada to the knockout stage in first place, meaning they would play again in Vancouver against a lower-seeded team from another group. The opponent is still a mystery, but would be a third-place team from either Group E, F, G, I or J.
If Canada loses their match against the Swiss, they would likely finish second in their group, unless the Bosnians can overcome the current nine-point differential.
If that happens, Canada would finish third in Group B, and their fate would be a mystery until all Group Stage matches are finished on June 27th.
Second place would mean the team plays the runner-up from Group A—South Africa, South Korea or Czechia.
In Victoria, celebrations have been ramping up.
Market Square is the place to be for matches, with a large screen set up, thousands of fans already attending previous games and an electric atmosphere.
Other restaurants and pubs around the city are showing the games as well, and in Langford, the Langford Station is hosting watch parties for all World Cup matches.
The Downtown Victoria Business Association is hosting many of these events around the city this summer, with the support of the City of Victoria.
The next match may be the most important one Team Canada has ever played in the World Cup, so be sure to support the team, show up and get loud this Wednesday at Market Square or one of the other participating venues in the city.
