A pedestrian has died following an early-morning collision involving a commercial vehicle in Saanich on Saturday.
Saanich Police confirmed shortly before noon that the collision happened just after 3 a.m. on Saturday, August 8th, at the intersection of McKenzie and Glanford avenues, near the Pat Bay Highway.
Police said a commercial vehicle collided with a pedestrian.
Despite efforts by first responders at the scene, the pedestrian succumbed to their injuries.
The victim’s identity has not been released, but police confirmed their next of kin have been notified.
According to Saanich Police, the driver of the commercial vehicle remained at the scene following the collision and is cooperating with investigators.
McKenzie Avenue was closed in both directions between the Pat Bay Highway and Glanford Avenue for several hours Saturday morning.
A photo from the scene showed a significant police presence, with police tape blocking the roadway and a privacy tent set up near a large commercial vehicle.
Police initially described the incident as a “serious collision” and asked motorists to avoid the area while investigators worked at the scene.
Forensic investigators and collision analysts spent several hours gathering evidence before the roadway reopened later Saturday morning.
Saanich Police have now confirmed the investigation has been turned over to the department’s Major Crime Unit.
