Get out and walk or run for a good cause this month while celebrating the dad in your life!
On Sunday, June 21st, Island Prostate Centre will host its 23rd annual Father’s Day Walk/Run for Prostate Cancer.
The event will be taking place at Camosun College’s Interurban Campus and will raise critical funds to support people and families across Vancouver Island navigating a prostate cancer diagnosis.
Beginning at 10 a.m., the family-friendly event will feature a three- or five-kilometre walk or run. After the walk, attendees can satisfy their hunger and mingle with a pancake breakfast, live music and activities for the whole family. Pets and strollers are also welcome.
The walk isn’t just exercise, but a deeply personal event for many attendees.
“Almost everyone knows someone who has been impacted by prostate cancer,” said Leanne Kopp, Executive Director of Island Prostate Centre.
“Some people walk to celebrate a survivor. Others walk in memory of someone they’ve lost. Many are walking beside a loved one currently going through treatment.
Kopp went on to explain that the event is meaningful for so many because it reminds men and families that they are not facing the journey alone.
Island Prostate Centre has been providing support groups, counselling, educational resources, survivorship programs and peer connections across Vancouver Island for more than 25 years.
The centre does not receive government funding, and relies exclusively on donations and community support.
Funds raised through the Father’s Day walk directly support the programs and services provided by the centre, the organization stated in a release.
“Every registration, donation, and fundraising effort truly makes a difference,” said Kopp.
“We regularly hear from men who tell us that the support they received through the Centre changed how they faced their diagnosis — and helped both them and their families feel less isolated during a very difficult time.”
Kopp added that the event provides hope, connection and community, and a chance to spend meaningful time together while ensuring no one has to face a diagnosis on their own.
