Wildfire near Chemainus now considered ‘under control’ after just 24 hours

After less than 24 hours, the wildfire discovered near Chemainus has been downgraded from ‘out of control’ to ‘under control’ by the BC Wildfire Service.

The wildfire is located around five kilometres northwest of Chemainus just off the Trans-Canada Highway.

BC Wildfire Service responded to the blaze with ground crews and aviation resources with support from the Ladysmith Fire Department.

The wildfire grew to 0.5 hectares in size at its largest and is suspected to have been caused by humans.

An ‘under control’ wildfire describes a wildfire that is not projected to spread beyond the current perimeter.

BC Wildfire Service will continue to monitor the site to ensure the blaze does not grow further.

Rain and cooler temperatures are expected this weekend in the region, which may reduce the risk of the fire growing again.

There are no other wildfires on Vancouver Island, but there are 15 ongoing wildfires throughout the province.
