The District of Saanich has announced that construction has begun on the new Nellie McClung library branch and affordable housing project.
Announced in early 2024, the new, modernized library and 210 units of affordable housing will be located at 3950 Cedar Hill Road.
The District says that construction has now gone ahead following final project approvals from BC Housing and the Capital Region Housing Corporation (CRHC), who will be operating the affordable housing-dedicated building.
“On behalf of Saanich Council, I am thrilled to see this project coming to life,” said Saanich Mayor Dean Murdock.
“We are incorporating mixed uses on municipal land to build affordable housing that’s close to transit, parks, shops and amenities.”
He added that having a safe, secure home in a well-connected neighbourhood will provide the opportunity for community members to put down roots and build a life in Saanich.
Once completed, the mix of rent levels will include 20% of the units at shelter rates, 50% of the units offering rent-geared-to income and 30% of the units with near market affordable rents.
“This new project is an exciting milestone for Saanich,” said Nina Krieger, MLA for Victoria-Swan Lake.
“By bringing together affordable housing and a new, modern library, we’re creating a space that supports both stability and connection in the community.”
While the new Nellie McClung library is being constructed, there is an express branch available at 3561 Shelbourne Street.
The $158.8 million project was funded by BC Housing and is expected to be completed by 2030.
