VicPD has announced the successful extradition of 82-year-old William Tate, who was brought into Canada from the United States to serve his sentence on charges related to child pornography.
In early December 2017, VicPD say they launched an investigation after identifying an IP address linked to the uploading, downloading and sharing of child abuse material.
After further investigation, police executed a search warrant at Tate’s residence. There, police seized several electronic devices containing thousands of images and videos of child abuse material.
This morning, nearly a decade later, VicPD officers escorted Tate on a flight from the United States to Canada following his extradition.
Tate was reportedly extradited after failing to report to the Vancouver Island Regional Correction Centre (VIRCC) in late 2025.
He was to begin serving a two-year sentence for child pornography offences.
Once it was determined Tate did not intend to serve his time, a warrant was put out for his arrest on charges related to escape from lawful custody.
VicPD investigators tracked Tate to the United States and through collaboration with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the US Marshals Service, he was brought into custody in San Francisco.
Tate is now serving his sentence after being turned over to the custody of BC Corrections.
