One person has died and four others were seriously injured following a single-vehicle crash near Mesachie Lake early Thursday morning.

According to Lake Cowichan RCMP, emergency crews were called to the 9000 block of South Shore Road at around 1:15 a.m. on May 28th after reports of a crash involving a red 2007 Honda Civic carrying five occupants.

Police say four people suffered serious injuries and were taken to hospital by BC Emergency Health Services. One passenger later died from their injuries.

Members of the Mesachie Lake Fire Department also responded to the scene.

South Shore Road was temporarily closed while a collision analyst conducted an investigation into the crash.

“Criminality is believed to have been a contributing factor leading up to the fatal collision,” said Corporal Alex Bérubé, spokesperson for the BC RCMP.

RCMP are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Lake Cowichan RCMP at (250) 749-6668.
