A Dollarama location in Sidney has been temporarily closed following reports of a rodent infestation that residents say has been ongoing for months.

Photos shared online appear to show mouse droppings on store shelves and products, along with sightings of live mice and, in some cases, deceased baby rodents inside the store during business hours.

Several residents have said the issue dates back to at least February.

On Thursday, pest control vehicles were seen outside the store at 2210 Beacon Avenue. Signage posted at the location indicated the closure was due to “renovation.”

Victoria Buzz obtained correspondence from an Island Health environmental health officer responding to a customer complaint. In the email, the officer noted staff had been directed to thoroughly clean and disinfect affected areas and discard contaminated products.

The officer also stated the store uses a third-party pest control service on a weekly basis but acknowledged that additional measures were required.

According to the email, further steps include sealing structural gaps, removing compromised products and completing a full sanitation of the premises, along with overnight cleaning arranged by head office.

Follow-up inspections are expected.

In a statement to Victoria Buzz, Island Health confirmed it is aware of the situation.

“Island Health is aware of the situation at Dollarama and has reached out to offer support,” the statement reads.

The health authority noted that retail stores such as Dollarama are not subject to the same regulations as food premises, as they primarily sell low-risk prepackaged items.

As a result, no enforcement action has been taken. It is not yet clear when the store will reopen.

Victoria Buzz has reached out to Dollarama for comment but had not received a response as of publication. This story will be updated if more information becomes available.

They ought to deal with the downtown location. I’ve seen mice running around often when I’ve been there, but that’s par for the course in most older buildings downtown. What should NOT be par for the course was the complete lack of response from any of the staff or security on duty when I told them there was a guy in the gift card section who had dropped trou right as I walked into that aisle, and proceeded to squat and start defecating right there on the floor. It’s one thing to have to inspect your purchases to ensure they’re not chewed on or infected with mouse droppings. It’s quite another to have to worry about stepping in human feces while you shop! 🤮

i am surprized that in cases like this no one is worried about hantavirus. One case of that would likely end any good will the store still has.

I was there a few times over the past couple of months and it was bad. Feces everywhere and all over stuffed animals when Valentines stuff was out.
