The District of Saanich is seeking feedback from residents to help decide which roads should become neighbourhood bikeways.
They are also looking to establish what areas are the highest priority for establishing bikeways in the community.
This endeavour is part of the District’s Neighbourhood Bikeways Identification and Prioritization Project, which will see Saanich expand the network of streets that are safe for cyclists of all ages and abilities.
According to the District, this project will grow the long-term bicycle network in the community—a priority of the Active Transportation Plan.
Neighbourhood bikeways help to transform streets, which encourages vehicle traffic to slow down while promoting cyclists safely.
They are established with accessibility in mind and often connect existing protected bike routes and trails, says the District.
Some features of bikeways include pavement markings, speed humps, traffic circles and diverters that help make cyclists feel more comfortable and slow traffic down.
Neighbourhood bikeways have already been implemented throughout Saanich. Some streets that have been converted to bikeways include Braefoot Road, Grange Road and Seaton Street.
Thus far, the District has done one round of public engagement, which was completed last fall.
Respondents helped guide the District on how they should decide which routes to make neighbourhood bikeways, as well as what matters most when prioritizing neighbourhood bikeways.
Now, a second round of feedback is sought by Saanich to further determine where bikeways are needed.
Residents are invited to provide feedback through an online survey that will be open until June 7th.
