A Saanich man is facing multiple criminal charges following a head-on collision on Highway 19 near Parksville last year that injured three people, including a baby.

According to BC Highway Patrol, the crash happened on March 3rd, 2025, shortly after 4 p.m. near the Church Road overpass in Parksville.

Police say a white Chevrolet pickup crossed the median from the southbound lanes and collided head-on with a grey Toyota Prius travelling northbound.

The crash shut down Highway 19 and prompted a large emergency response that included firefighters, BC Highway Patrol officers and an air ambulance.

Both vehicles were destroyed in the collision.

At the time, investigators described those involved as “lucky to be alive.”

The driver of the pickup suffered non-life-threatening injuries while the driver of the Prius and her baby were also injured in the crash.

Police previously noted the child likely survived without life-threatening injuries because they were properly secured in a child car seat in the rear passenger area of the vehicle.

Following an investigation, the BC Prosecution Service approved six criminal charges against 28-year-old Matthew St. Pierre of Saanich on February 26th.

Police say St. Pierre was arrested on March 25th and is facing two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, two counts of impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm and two counts of operating a vehicle with a blood alcohol level over .08 causing bodily harm.

St. Pierre has since been released and is scheduled to appear in Nanaimo Provincial Court on May 12th.
