Suspected e-bike battery explosion prompts road closure in Nanaimo

A suspected e-bike battery explosion prompted a temporary road closure in Nanaimo on Sunday morning.

According to the Nanaimo RCMP, officers responded shortly after 8 a.m. on May 17th to reports of an explosion in a wooded area near the 900 block of Terminal Avenue North.

Police closed a section of Terminal Avenue North to both pedestrians and motorists while emergency crews and investigators responded to the scene.

Nanaimo RCMP, Nanaimo Fire Rescue and BC Emergency Health Services all attended. Investigators located significant metal debris in the area that was consistent with an explosion.

The RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit was consulted and RCMP Forensic Identification Services also attended the scene as part of the investigation.

Preliminary findings suggest the explosion was likely caused by an exploding e-bike battery.

No injuries were reported and there was no damage to nearby property.

The road reopened to the public at approximately 10 a.m. Sunday morning.
