Greater Victoria is in for one of its busiest weekends of the year, with thousands set to gather for the sixth annual Khalsa Day celebration, all while the city also prepares for the return of the TC10K.
The Victoria Sikh community will mark Vaisakhi this Sunday, April 26th, with a vibrant and welcoming Khalsa Day event at the Gurdwara Singh Sabha Victoria, located at 470 Cecelia Road.
Organizers expect more than 7,000 people to attend the free, family-friendly celebration, which runs throughout the day and features a mix of cultural showcases, community connection and tradition.
The event includes a colourful parade beginning at 10 a.m., departing from the gurdwara and making its way through the Burnside neighbourhood before returning to the site.
Visitors can also explore more than 40 stalls highlighting Sikh history, live music, martial arts demonstrations, children’s activities and more.
A key part of the celebration is the sharing of free vegetarian food, known as langar, which is offered to everyone regardless of background.
Organizers say the event is rooted in values of kindness, inclusivity and service.
Khalsa Day commemorates the founding of the Khalsa in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh Ji, a defining moment in Sikh history that continues to be observed each year through Vaisakhi celebrations around the world.
Major events in Vancouver and Surrey have already taken place in recent days, drawing massive crowds.
This weekend’s gathering in Victoria also comes just days after the one-year anniversary of the tragic Lapu Lapu Day festival mass killing in Vancouver.
In light of that, organizers say additional safety measures will be in place to ensure a secure environment for attendees.
With both Khalsa Day and the TC10K taking place on Sunday, residents can expect increased traffic and road closures across parts of the region.
Cecelia Road will be closed to vehicles for the duration of the Khalsa Day event, with parking restrictions in effect along the parade route and surrounding area. Attendees are encouraged to walk, cycle or take transit, with BC Transit operating on its regular schedule.
For many, the event is not only a cultural celebration but also a chance to come together as a community. Everyone is welcome.
