Langford city council took steps to protect 90 parcels of parkland and green spaces at this week’s council meeting on April 20th.
By adopting the Park Dedication Bylaw, this endeavour formally dedicates the 209 collective acres of parkland as protected.
These lands will be protected in perpetuity for future generations to have access to green space, which will eventually allow future Langford residents to be just a short walk away from a local park.
The City says that the chosen parcels were selected based on their function and characteristics, including those with existing amenities such as playgrounds or playing fields and largely forested areas.
Some of these parcels include Centennial Park, Glen Lake Beach Park, Veteran’s Memorial Park additions, Westhills Park and Willing Park.
“Land is one of the most valuable resources a growing city has,” said Mayor Scott Goodmanson.
“This bylaw ensures that future councils cannot dispose of or sell these lands without broad public consent.”
The decision to protect these areas against development comes from the city’s rapid population growth over the past 10 years, along with changing demographics and community needs.
