The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has concluded its investigation into an arrest in Nanaimo where a man was injured, determining that police actions did not contribute to the harm.
The incident occurred around 12:40 p.m. on April 20th, 2025, when Nanaimo RCMP officers arrested a man near his home in the Sherwood Forest area.
During the arrest, there was an interaction between the man and police and the man sustained an injury while taken into custody.
He was then transported to hospital for treatment.

The IIO was notified shortly after the incident and launched an investigation, as required whenever police involvement results in serious harm.
According to the IIO , investigators reviewed medical records, police reports, and statements from the affected person and civilian witnesses.
Following that review, the chief civilian director determined there was no connection between police action or inaction and the man’s injury.
As a result, the IIO has concluded its investigation, and no further action will be taken.
The IIO is BC’s independent civilian oversight body responsible for investigating incidents involving police that result in serious harm or death, to determine whether any officer may have committed an offence.
