It’s hard to impress your friends—or strangers on motorcycles—when your brand-new Porsche ends up in a police impound lot.
That’s the message BC Highway Patrol sent this week after stopping a 25-year-old man from Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island.
According to police, he was driving at 144 km/h on the Island Highway near Hillview Road in Nanoose Bay.
Police reported that the black Porsche 718 GT4 RS had just zoomed past two motorcycles that were already exceeding the 90 km/h limit.
The driver may have thought he was showcasing his car’s speed, but he ended up getting towed instead.
“Had this driver showed a little restraint, it might have been the motorcycles that were ticketed and impounded,” says Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol.
“Instead, this driver raced straight into the hassle and lost opportunity of watching his expensive car get impounded for seven days. Whatever his reason for buying that car, it probably wasn’t to watch it sit an impound lot while he takes Uber.”
Police estimate that the fines, impound and tow fees, along with high-risk driver premiums, will total at least $2,500 over the next three years.
The playful press release may have poked fun at the situation, but officers reminded drivers that speeding is serious.
It is still one of the top three causes of fatal crashes in BC and continues to be a key focus for highway patrol officers on Vancouver Island and elsewhere.
