Sooke school district vice-principal suspended for misconduct

A vice-principal in the Sooke school district has reached a formal disciplinary agreement with the Commissioner for Teacher Regulation after an incident in January 2024 that involved physically pushing a youth who was not a student.

Ryan Andy Hardath Dube, the vice-principal, has held a Professional Certificate of Qualification since 2002. This certificate has continued under the Teachers Act since 2012.

On January 19th, 2024, around 1:40 p.m., Dube responded to a colleague’s request to remove a non-student from the school.

When he arrived at the second-floor landing, he saw another vice-principal escorting the youth toward the stairs. Dube then forcefully pushed the youth from behind before the youth was escorted out without further issues.

School District No. 62 disciplined Dube on March 15th, 2024.

As a result, Dube faced a three-day suspension without pay. He was also required to complete a course called “De-Escalating Hostility” at the Justice Institute of BC and review the Professional Standards for BC Educators and the district’s Code of Conduct policy.

Dube finished the required course on April 10th of this year. On June 6th, 2024, the Commissioner began an investigation under the Teachers Act. Following this, on February 6th, a proposed Consent Resolution Agreement was presented to Dube.

In the agreement, which Dube accepted, he acknowledged that his actions—physically pushing the youth—were professional misconduct and violated Standard 2 of the Professional Standards for BC Educators.

Considering mitigating factors, such as Dube’s concern for student and staff safety, the Commissioner decided that a one-day suspension of Dube’s teaching certificate, effective September 19th, 2025, was an appropriate punishment.

Dube also agreed not to contradict the terms or his admissions in the agreement.

The agreement will be publicly posted in full on the Commissioner’s website as required by the Teachers Act. A record of this disciplinary action will also be added to the Ministry of Education and Child Care’s online registry.

If Dube violates any part of the agreement, the Commissioner may start further proceedings, using the details of this case as proof of misconduct.
