A suspected impaired driver is facing over $1,000 in fines and had his car impounded after leading West Shore RCMP on a late-night chase through the Colwood area.
On August 30th, at around 10:30 p.m., police responded to reports of a driver who was thought to be impaired on Ocean Boulevard.
Police attempted to stop the black Mazda CX-5, but rather than stopping, the driver reportedly sped away, committing several “dangerous” infractions while doing so.
After a short chase, officers located the vehicle and arrested the driver, a 43-year-old man from Victoria.
In total, the driver’s violation tickets for the night were over $1,000, and he lost 16 driver penalty points.
His infractions were as follows:
- Excessive speed – $483 fine, 3 points
- Crossing a solid double line – $109 fine, 3 points
- Failing to stop for police – $144 fine, 3 points
- Failing to take proper precautions for vulnerable road users – $109 fine, 3 points
- Illegal pass on a lane roadway – $109 fine, 2 points
- Unsafe U-turn – $121 fine, 2 points
“This driver’s reckless actions put themselves, our officers, and members of the public at significant risk,” says Cpl. Mike Jacobson of the West Shore RCMP Traffic Unit.
“We want to remind motorists that failing to stop for police is a serious offence, and the consequences can include Criminal Code charges, fines, points on your license, and possibly losing your vehicle.”
As a result of the incidents, his vehicle was also impounded, and a notice was served for stunting and excessive speed.
