Hullo Ferries files for mediation in negotiation while union claims they are stalling

On Friday, September 5th, Hullo Ferries announced they have contacted the BC Labour Relations Board surrounding mediation for negotiations with the ferries’ workers.

This comes in response to the BC Ferry and Marine Workers’ Union (BCFMWU)—who represent the workers—holding a vote in which 91% of workers voted in favour of a strike.

The negotiations to establish the workers’ first collective agreement with Hullo Ferries has been ongoing for over a year now and according to the union, the company has been stalling every step of the way.

“Last week the employer declared impasse after tabling a single ‘take it or leave it’ proposal. Since then, they’ve backpedaled on declaring an impasse and now filed for mediation,” said Eric McNeely, BCFMWU President.

Although Hullo Ferries says that the company remains confident that a fair and constructive agreement will be reached through good faith bargaining with mediation assistance, the union believes their priorities lie elsewhere.

BCFMWU’s position is that Hullo’s strategy is to avoid meaningful talks until after the busy travel season.

“Our members show up every day, navigating vessels, helping passengers, responding to emergencies, keeping the ships that customers rely on in good repair. Hullo treats them like they’re disposable,” said McNeely.

“That’s unacceptable.”

Primarily, what the workers have been working to achieve are a contract, fair wages, predictable schedules as well as job security.

The union says that though they are not happy with Hullo Ferries’ tactics, they are still ready and willing to negotiate.

As of this publication, all Hullo sailings will continue to operate as scheduled.

Further updates will be provided by both parties when developments in the negotiation process are made.
