West Shore RCMP have confirmed the recovery of a 19-year-old man who drowned in Upper Thetis Lake last week.

The incident happened around 5:09 p.m. on Wednesday, September 4th, when witnesses reported that the young man went under while swimming and did not come back up.

After several days of searching in difficult conditions, divers found his body at about 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 7th.

The victim has been identified by family as Anthony, who was visiting Vancouver Island from California with relatives.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with them as they grieve this tragic loss,” West Shore RCMP said in a statement.

“We would like to sincerely thank the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team, the View Royal Fire Department divers, and the CRD Park Rangers for their dedicated efforts and assistance in this challenging recovery operation.”

Family members have expressed their gratitude for the community support on Facebook.

“Thank you all so much. God has proven to us over and over that we are held, supported and loved! Because of your shares, prayers and help, the police stepped up a day earlier and divers were able to find him so we can bring him home,” wrote Nami Hewitt.

“It feels amazing to know that everyone up in Victoria can finally come home to family and lay him to rest. Our hearts are heavy but they have been supported by you all from the very start.”

She also noted that many people have asked how they can further help. Donations are being accepted to assist with unexpected expenses through Venmo, Zelle, and email.

  • Zelle: 951-704-0892 – Email (Zelle): the.alexandra.rios@gmail.com (Name: Alexandra Rios)

They ask that anyone who donates leave a short note so contributions can be directed properly.

“Thank you to the amazing volunteer divers, every one of you in the Victoria community that came to the lake to aid, support and open up your homes to our family and every single one of you who engaged, shared the post and prayed for our family!”

No further details will be released by RCMP at this time.
