Saanich Police reported that they’ve caught 229 impaired drivers in the first six months of 2025.
Nearly half of the drivers stopped from January 1st to the end of June (114 people), received a 90-day driving prohibition. This means they have either blown a “fail” on a screening device or have refused to provide a breath sample.
Of the 229 impaired drivers caught, 182 driving prohibitions were given, ranging from 3 to 90 days. These drivers also had their vehicles impounded, ranging from 3 to 30 days.
Police also found that 134 of the drivers were stopped between 8 p.m. and 2 a.m., 12 of the 229 were impaired by drugs and six had an invalid licence or no licence at all.
One person had a Class 1 licence and was caught operating a tractor trailer while attempting to make a commercial delivery.
This particular incident occurred on Monday, April 28th at around 9 p.m., when police were informed that a tractor trailer was driving erratically while going southbound on the Pat Bay Highway.
Officers were able to locate the vehicle and pulled the driver over. Due to an allegedly strong smell of alcohol coming from the male driver, officers administered two roadside breathalyzer tests, which both read ‘Fail.’
His driver’s license was immediately seized and he was given a 90-day driving prohibition.

Police said that 2025’s present total of 229 is 91 less than the 320 stopped in the first six months of 2024—a year in which a record number 628 impaired drivers were caught.
Motorists should expect to encounter roadblocks throughout July and August.
“With so many options available, rideshare, cab, public transit, designated driver, there is no excuse to get behind the wheel while impaired by drugs or alcohol,” the media release reads.
“If you choose to drive impaired, when you are caught you will face the consequences.”
