A 37-year-old man from Port Alberni was taken to hospital with serious, life-altering injuries following a motorcycle crash on the mainland Saturday morning.
The crash, deemed serious by BC Highway Patrol, happened on July 12, at around 11:13 a.m. on Highway 17 between Tsawwassen Drive and Salish Sea Drive.
It involved a black Harley Davidson motorcycle and a dark green Toyota SUV and caused major traffic delays for ferry travellers heading to and from the nearby BC Ferries terminal for much of the day.
A second SUV, a grey Honda, was damaged by debris from the initial collision. According to RCMP, the motorcyclist collided with the green SUV.

Police said the driver of the SUV remained on scene and was not injured.
The highway was shut down near Tsawwassen Drive while investigators responded, and detours were put in place.
“The minutes leading up to the collision, and the moments before the collision, are crucially important to the investigation,” says Corporal Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol.
“If you were in the area and saw these vehicles, or have dash camera footage, you could really help police by sharing what you saw.”
Police are now seeking additional information to assist their investigation and are asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident—or who has dashcam footage from the area between 11:10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.—to contact BC Highway Patrol at 604-526-9744, quoting file number 2025-1217.
Delta Police and the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) are assisting with the investigation.
