If you’ve taken a stroll through Oak Bay recently, you may have come across a surprising sight.
It’s one that may make you stop, stare, and possibly question your life choices—it’s a statue of a man on a toilet, deeply engaged in some serious research.
This unusual public art piece, part of Oak Bay’s Arts Alive program, is the latest creation by renowned sculptor Ron Simmer.
Titled Modern Man Does Research, the sculpture has already sparked a mix of chuckles, raised eyebrows, and an occasional “Is this really art?”
Simmer, never one to shy away from mixing humor with artistry, is the mastermind behind this bronze masterpiece. Using recycled stainless steel cookware, he has fashioned the figure of a man—seated on the proverbial throne, no less—looking almost too serious for someone in such a position.
“The goal here is to engage people, to get them thinking,” Simmer says with a grin, likely amused by the double meaning of “research” and the setting of the piece. “If I can make someone smile as they walk by, that’s a win. If I can make them reflect on environmental issues while they’re at it, even better.”
Indeed, Modern Man Does Research might not only make you laugh, but it might just inspire a deeper reflection on the relationship between humanity, nature, and recycled materials.
After all, what says ‘environmental consciousness’ more than a man taking his research to the bathroom? It’s both absurd and oddly thought-provoking.
While many might wonder why Simmer chose a toilet as his canvas, the artist assures us it’s all part of his artistic philosophy.
“I’m creating art that’s meant to be fun, imaginative, and yes—thoughtful,” Simmer explains. “Art is essential for living life to the fullest. And sometimes, that includes making people laugh at something they weren’t expecting.”
Located at Causton’s Green, near Hampshire Road, the piece is now part of Oak Bay’s outdoor sculpture exhibition, with the chance to be voted into the permanent collection.
The sculpture—an amusing, yet puzzling, sight—encourages viewers to consider the bigger picture (and not just the one happening on the toilet).
Simmer’s work has been shown at public exhibitions across BC and even in several US locations. He’s also known for his involvement in quirky art events like bad art sales and trash fashion shows.
But Modern Man Does Research is certainly one of his more… intimate installations. Perhaps it’s a metaphor for modern life—deep thinking often happens in the most unexpected places.
And as for whether or not it’s art?
Well, Simmer has a clear answer. “Absolutely! Art should make you feel something, even if it’s just confusion or laughter. If people stop and look, that’s what matters.”
So, the next time you’re out and about in Oak Bay, keep an eye out for the Modern Man—a thinker, a researcher, and perhaps, a bathroom philosopher.
And while you may not have expected to find such a profound work of art in a public restroom setting, remember, art doesn’t always have to be highbrow to be meaningful.
Sometimes, it’s just a guy on a toilet, thinking big thoughts.
