More northern lights are possible over Vancouver Island overnight Sunday

Did you missed the Northern Lights Last Night?

Don’t fret, you might get another chance tonight over Vancouver Island.

If you were up late Saturday night, you might’ve been one of the lucky few to catch the northern lights dancing over Vancouver Island — a rare and stunning sight this far south.

The good news? You might not have missed your only shot.

Thanks to an ongoing geomagnetic storm, conditions are still ripe for the aurora to make another appearance tonight (Sunday), with experts advising skywatchers to stay alert.

According to the US Space Weather Prediction Center and Natural Resources Canada, Earth is currently experiencing the effects of a strong solar storm triggered by a coronal mass ejection (CME) and high-speed solar winds.

The result has been a series of G3 and G4-level geomagnetic storms — powerful enough to push the aurora borealis well into mid-latitude regions like southern British Columbia.

Saturday night’s aurora came as part of a severe G4 storm, and forecasters say the activity could persist into the early hours of Monday, June 2nd. Another CME is also expected to strike late Sunday, which could set the stage for more sky shows.

If you missed the lights last night, it’s worth heading outside after dark and looking to the north — ideally from a location with minimal light pollution.

The farther away you are from city lights, the better your chances of catching the glow.

It’s not every weekend Vancouver Island gets treated to a double feature of the aurora borealis. Keep your eyes on the sky!
