Bus-goers on Vancouver Island will have the pleasure of riding for free this Wednesday, June 4th.
This is because Wednesday marks Clean Air Day in Canada.
Clean Air Day was launched by the government back in 1999 as a way to encourage Canadians to be more environmentally-friendly, as well as to raise awareness surrounding air quality and climate change.
The hope was that people may try riding the bus instead of driving on their commutes and consider taking the more environmentally-friendly option, reducing their individual greenhouse gas emissions.
BC Transit and the Victoria Regional Transit System wanted to echo these calls for environmental consideration this year, so all transit in the region will be free this Wednesday.
“Shifting to more environmentally sustainable modes of transportation, such as transit, drastically reduces the number of single occupant vehicles on the road, reduces traffic, and helps achieve an overall reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants in support the Province of BC’s CleanBC Plan,” said BC Transit in a media release.
Additionally, BC Transit says they are working toward reducing their greenhouse gas emissions by implementing more eclectic buses.
In April, the first three of 10 electric buses for use in Victoria, and will continue to arrive through the fall.
