Anyone who flies to and from the island, this is for you.

According to a media release from the BC Government, through the BC Air Access Program (BCAAP), four Vancouver Island airports will receive upwards of $2.2 million in repair funds.

The largest amount of funding will go towards the Comox Valley Airport where $2 million will be set aside for a runway extension.

Nanaimo Airport will receive $750,000 to upgrade its electrical and lighting systems, while Courtenay Airpark will receive $66,300 to rehabilitate its runway and taxiway.

Further up island, the province has set aside $35,000 for Alert Bay to help create a facility master plan for the small island located off the coast of Port McNeil.

By improving these vital facilities, communities will be able to enjoy easier access and continued connection to the rest of the province.

“These improvements to our rural and regional airports will help keep British Columbians connected and our economy on the move,” said Mike Farnworth, Minister of Transportation and Transit.

In total, BC is investing $6.2 million, supporting 16 airport upgrades across the province through the BCAAP.

“From wildfire suppression to air-ambulance operations, from high-value tourism to connecting Indigenous and rural communities within our province and beyond, the BC Air Access Program supports our economy and society,” said Cathy Press, chair, BC Aviation Council.

Since 2017, BCAAP has committed more than $70 million in grants to infrastructure projects at 80 air facilities.
